5 Designing the Static Parts

When designing an engine which is a prototype and thus experimental, the added complexity of castings is best avoided. The author suggests that the aluminium housings are best machined from the solid, as the use of solid bar stock ensures good quality, homogenous material which is strong and consistent and easy to machine. The process of designing and making modules for the main units offers many advantages (see Fig. 5-1).
